The CCIB would like to congratulate Dr. Maria Solesio for being awarded the MIRA award from the NIH! This is a specialty award that is meant to support research into advances into disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. The Solesio lab will be using this award to develop new methods to assay inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) in mammalian cells and to better understand the effects of depletion of mitochondrial polyP on the organelle. The exact mechanisms that drive mitochondrial dysfunction are still poorly understood and the Solesio lab plans to better understand these mechanisms through their study of polyP, a well-known and highly conserved energy metabolite. There are many diseases related mitochondrial dysfunction, so this research could shed some light on to how to treat and prevent a variety of diseases.
