The CCIB would like to congratulate Dr. Maria Solesio for being awarded an NSF grant! The Solesio lab plans to use this award to better our understanding of the role of inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) in response to stressors in mammalian cells. The mechanisms that drive mitochondrial dysfunction are poorly understood, especially how those mechanisms work under stressful conditions. PolyP could play an important role in these mechanisms as the molecule is very structurally similar to ATP, the body’s main source of energy, and there is evidence to believe that polyP regulates the production of ATP. The Solesio lab will also be using this award to provide underrepresented undergraduate students with the opportunity to work in their lab on this project.
